02Episode overview

Can humor actually change the story we are living inside?

Lynn Harris has built a career around comedy and culture change, and she believes humor can do something argument often cannot:

Make people listen.

In this episode of 100 Stories: The Narrative Intelligence Project, we talk about how comedy exposes contradictions, builds trust, challenges dominant narratives, and creates enough distance for us to see something differently.

We also talk about pain.

Lynn tells the story of losing Breakup Girl, the hugely successful internet property that had become part of her creative identity, and what she learned afterward:

Not every story has to have a silver lining.

She also shares how growing up close to a Holocaust survivor shaped her, what comedy can and cannot do with trauma, why no subject is automatically off limits, and why who gets to stand onstage and speak is itself a question of power.

One of my favorite ideas from the conversation comes from Lynn’s description of great comedians:

They may not change the facts.

They help us see a different pattern between them.

And that may be one of humor’s most powerful forms of Narrative Intelligence.
