The Story in Your Voice: How Breath, Body & Identity Shape Us

with Julie Fogh

02Episode overview

What if the story you are living can be heard in your voice before you can fully explain it?

In this episode of 100 Stories: The Narrative Intelligence Project, Paige Williams speaks with Julie Fogh, co-founder of Vital Voice Training, about voice, identity, breath, silence, performance, and the communication habits we develop over a lifetime.

Julie grew up deeply shy and learned early not to call attention to herself. Acting and voice work eventually showed her that finding her voice was not about becoming someone bigger or more impressive. It was about gaining access to more of herself.

Together, Paige and Julie explore:

why there may be no single “authentic voice”

how communication habits can become forms of protection

why silence and introversion are too often treated as leadership problems

what happens when an old story no longer fits the person speaking it

how using our voice can involve risk, pleasure, boundaries, and self-expression

why changing behavior or expression requires practice

how stories connect otherwise separate events into meaning

Julie also shares a profound transformation in her own life. After leaving New York, her fiancé, and the life she had built, she spent years believing she had failed. With time, that interpretation changed. She began to understand that she had been trying to survive inside a life that did not fit her.

Her definition of Narrative Intelligence offers another important piece of the field Paige is building: stories are how we make sense of the space between events. Narrative Intelligence is recognizing that the connective tissue between those events can change.
